AFC Bournemouth, founded in 1899, took until 2015/16 to kick a football in the English top flight. Before that, the Cherries had spent their 82-year Football League history in the lower divisions, just six of which were in the second tier.
The club were elected to the Football League in 1923, replacing Stalybridge Celtic. Their first match was a 1 – 3 defeat at Swindon Town.
Eddie Howe, the Bournemouth manager, won many admirers as his team played a silky passing game to win promotion to the Premier League. The club’s history had been littered with occasional moments of brilliance. Ted MacDougall still holds the record for most goals in an FA Cup tie, scoring 9 in Bournemouth’s 11 – 0 win over Margate.
Another record came in February 2004. With the Cherries winning 3 – 0 at home to Wrexham, James Hayter came on as a substitute in the 84th minute and scored a hat-trick in under 140 seconds, the fastest ever scored in a professional match.
Their crowning glory before 2015’s Championship title win was the 1984 FA Cup 3rd round win over Manchester United. The previous season had seen United beat Brighton in the final, 4 – 0 in a replay. This time they travelled to face Bournemouth who were in the relegation places in Division Three (now League One). The Cherries won 2 – 0 thanks to Milton Graham and Ian Thompson’s goals that day. 2016/17 was a season to remember for the Cherries. They recorded their highest-ever league finish and were generally out of the relegation fight all season. More to the point, they stayed true to their football principles. But everyone will remember Natan Ake's last-minute winner over Liverpool in a 4 - 3 win. And nobody will forget the 3 - 0 lead Bournemouth sprinted into at home to Arsenal. That it ended 3 - 3 is not the point. Bournemouth dared to dream!

Leading Goalscorer
Ronnie Eyre, 259 goals
Ronnie Eyre played for Bournemouth between 1924 and 1933, netting a club record 202 goals. He joined the club in the summer of 1924 from Sheffield Wednesday.
When Bournemouth finished 18th in 1932-33, they sold Eyre, as well as several other key players. He scored 202 league goals for the club during his 8½ years on the south coast.
Greatest Moment
2nd May 2015, The Valley. Going into the final day of the season, Bournemouth were all but promoted. Their goal difference was vastly superior to Middlesbrough’s meaning only a freak disaster could deny them. The Cherries did their part, winning 3 – 0 at Charlton whilst Middlesbrough could only draw at Brighton.
Unexpectedly, leaders Watford drew at Sheffield Wednesday meaning that not only were Bournemouth promoted to the Premier League for the first time, they were up as champions!
