The Netherlands; European football’s great entertainers but on a downward slide for a decade. South Africa, 2010; the ignominy of a man sent off in the World Cup final was nothing compared to the broken hearts in the footballing family as the Dutch threw away the heritage of Cruyff, Krol, and Michels as they tried to kick Spain off the pitch. They lost, the footballing family rejoiced. Spain, playing football the right way, triumphed. Fast forward to Brazil 2014 and the old Holland were back. The Netherlands crushed Spain 5 – 1 in one of the performances of the World Cup. A fantastic win which led to better things and a third-place courtesy of a 3 – 0 win over Brazil. The Fabulous Oranje were back. In the South American country known for colour and joie de vivre, the Dutch were bitten by the bug, Not the vintage Dutch side but playing football as it was meant to be. But it’s been downhill since. They didn’t make Euro 2016, knocked out by the Czech Republic, Iceland and Turkey. Russia 2018? The next qualifier will decide if they are to make it: away in France, needing to win so that victory over Sweden in the final group match won’t be meaningless.
