Nickname: The Black Cats
Formed: 1878
Ground: Stadium of Light
Manager: David Moyes
Captain: John O’Shea
Sunderland were one of the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888. Described by William McGregor, the ‘father of the Football League’, as the “Team of All Talents”, they won consecutive titles in 1891 – 92, 1892 – 93, finishing runners-up in 1893 – 94 before winning the title once again a season later.
The Black Cats stayed in the top flight of English football until 1958 when they were relegated for the first time in their history. Since then the club has yo-yoed between the divisions, falling as low as League One but are once again back in the Premier League.
In 2015 – 16, Sunderland ensured their Premier League survival with a game to go. As if that didn’t bring relief and joy, relegating fierce local rivals Newcastle United in the process gave the moment added glee.

Greatest Moment
5th May 1973, Wembley Stadium. It remains the biggest shock in FA Cup final history. All-conquering Leeds United, managed by the legendary Don Revie, with a side pack full of household names. Defending FA Cup holders, recent league champions; the best team in the land. Sunderland, of Division Two (now the Championship) were unfancied but had beaten Arsenal in the semi-final.
Leeds threw everything at the Sunderland goal and Jim Montgomery saved it. The Sunderland goalkeeper pulled off the greatest save ever seen in an FA Cup final, pushing away Trevor Cherry’s header before pushing Peter Lorimer’s rebound onto the underside of the bar. Vic Malone cleared the ball to safety.
Ian Porterfield scored the only goal of the game to win the FA Cup for the Black Cats in one of the most enduring FA Cup memories as Bob Stokoe gambolled across the turf his overcoat flapping over his red tracksuit at the final whistle.
